Hand-block printed and handwoven fabric by the metre
Buy fabric by the metre at Rutambhara — hand-block printed Ajrakh and Dabu cottons, handwoven Jamdani muslin and kala cotton, each listed as a single metre so you can order exactly as many as your project needs.
Every metre is printed or woven by hand by Indian artisans, which is why colour and motif vary a little from one length to the next.
Fabric by the Metre — frequently asked questions
How is fabric sold by the metre here?
Each listing is one metre. Order the number of metres your project needs and they are supplied as a continuous length where stock allows.
How many metres do I need for a kurta?
Around 2.5 metres for a standard kurta, and about 3 metres for a longer or fuller cut. Check with your tailor first, as it depends on your measurements, the fabric width and the style.
Will the colour match if I order several metres?
Fabric is cut from the same bolt wherever possible. Because these are hand-printed and handwoven, small variations in colour and motif between lengths are normal and part of the craft.
Do you sell ready-to-stitch pieces instead?
Yes. Our kurta fabrics are sold as fixed ready-to-stitch lengths, and our dress materials come as suit sets.
