Handloom Dress Materials — frequently asked questions

What is included in a handloom dress material?

It varies across this range. Roughly half are full three-piece sets with top, bottom and dupatta; others are two-piece top-and-dupatta sets, semi-stitched sets, or a single kurta fabric length. Each product page states exactly what is included.

What is the difference between unstitched and semi-stitched?

Unstitched pieces are supplied as flat fabric for your tailor to cut and make up. Semi-stitched sets arrive partly tailored - usually a top that only needs adjusting - so there is less work to finish.

Is handloom fabric different from powerloom?

Yes. Handloom cloth is woven on a hand-operated loom, which gives it a softer handle, slight irregularities in the weave and far lower energy use than machine weaving.

Do colours and motifs vary between pieces?

Slightly, yes. Hand-weaving and hand-block printing produce small variations in colour depth and motif placement. This is characteristic of the craft rather than a defect.
