Tangaliya - "Threads of Tradition, Knots of Grace."

A centuries-old handwoven craft rooted in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat, Tangaliya is believed to have emerged from the intermingling of the Bharwad (shepherd) community and local Dangasia weavers. This unique inter-community legacy gave birth to a textile tradition like no other—where intricate dot patterns are not embroidered but woven directly into the fabric using the extra weft technique, a rare and highly skilled process.

The word Tangaliya derives from "tangal", meaning knot or dot. Its defining feature is the delicate "dana work" or "tapko"—tiny, bead-like dots created by inserting contrast-colored threads and meticulously knotting them by hand. The motif vocabulary reflects the weavers’ natural surroundings, featuring elements like peacocks, deer, trees, and "naughara" (nine-house clusters).

Traditionally woven using black sheep or camel wool for shawls and blankets, Tangaliya has evolved beautifully. Today, artisans weave magic in cotton and silk, crafting sarees, dupattas, and kurta fabrics for the modern market. This art form remains refreshingly pure—no mechanical tools, tracing papers, or devices are used. Every pattern follows a traditional method that dates back to the 14th century.

This Red Maroon cotton silk saree is a fine example of that legacy. Soft and breathable, it offers all-day comfort while the cleverly woven Tangaliya motifs lend a touch of age-old elegance. The vibrant colors and timeless patterns make it a perfect festive wear or a thoughtful gift for a loved one.

In 2009, Tangaliya Shawls were granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag under the name "Tangaliya Shawls of Gujarat", securing its rightful place among India’s treasured crafts.
