Ajrakh - "A slow craft, rooted in reverence for time and tactility" Ajrakh is one of the oldest and most revered textile traditions of the Indian subcontinent, with its origins dating back nearly 4,000 years to the ancient civilizations that flourished along the Indus Valley. Rooted in the desert regions of Kutch in Gujarat and parts of Sindh (now in Pakistan), Ajrakh has been passed down through generations of Khatri artisans, who have preserved its sacred process with unmatched devotion and care.
What sets Ajrakh apart is its complex hand-block printing technique combined with the use of natural, plant-based dyes. Each saree undergoes a meticulous process spanning 2-4 weeks, involving multiple stages of washing, dyeing, printing, and drying under the sun. The dyes are derived from elements like indigo leaves, madder root, iron, alum, pomegranate peel, and even camel dung, creating a palette that is earthy, rich, and eco-friendly. The result is a fabric that is alive—deepening in tone with every wash, and softening with every drape.
Rutambhara's pure silk Pracheen Ajrakh saree, has been hand block printed in a vibrant medley of yellow and olive hues, drawn from nature’s own palette. Crafted using traditional techniques and dyed with natural vegetable dyes, this piece celebrates the craftmanship of the Master Artisans vision of timeless art of Ajrakh while embracing a contemporary softness. The saree features a floral mélange—an intricate blend of floral motifs, each block hand-carved and thoughtfully placed, creating a rhythm of blossoms across silk. Light, fluid, and rooted in slow craft, our Ajrakh curation is a gentle nod to tradition and a celebration of artisanal tactility
